Daily Work

Some weeks, my work duties are interesting — they make a good subject for a blog post. But many weeks, I spend my time making incremental progress on more mundane activities. This past week, was like that. Most of the week was taken up with calculations and report preparation for some of the projects that I’ve discussed in other posts.

One item that I’m working on that feels a little more special is updating our teams report template and formatting. As a team, we’ve spent some time developing the technical content for a report template. This has included developing a few different options for standard language depending on the specifics of the project. The technical work is still in progress, but for the past few weeks, I’ve turned my attention towards design and formatting of the report. I’ve been reading Butterick’s Practical Typography to get some ideas about design and typography for my personal website, so it has been enjoyable to apply that learning to my professional life.

In more disappointing news, SCOTUS has decided that its fine for the Administration to go ahead with RIF plans. I’m not even sure whether I should be worried about my job, in particular. But I’m definitely worried about whether our agency will still have partners or a mission to fullfill. Given that there have been multiple attempts to sell off public lands, there may not be much need for an agency dedicated to building roads for those lands. Nonetheless, I’m trying to both “keep my chin up” and “keep my nose down”.

One final note to my friends and acquaintances in our partner agencies — NPS, USFS, USGS, and others — I’m thinking about you. As troubling and difficult as things have been for me, I know that other agencies are facing greater challenges. If anyone out there needs a friendly ear to voice their concerns, I’m here.
